i. Moldy Apartment

- (he is who I think he is)

When my master told me that a lesser god had killed himself, I could hardly believe it. Then to learn that it was the insane one...

In any case, I've been watching the apartment for years now, waiting for my boss to reply. He hasn't sent me a letter in weeks, and it's really starting to test my nerves.

Just the other day, some construction crew pulled out some rotten wallpaper out of the place. I heard that one of the few residents renting the apartment (my subject of whom to view from a long distance) had gone mad. If so, mission accomplished. I can go get my pay. The man is dead.

I was going to do some further scouting to make sure that the man truly is dead and that we won't need to worry about him any longer. According to my boss, he's quite powerful, but doesn't know it yet. It's as if he just needs to awaken.

Anyhow, the other day, I went to the apartment at night, the frogs chirping and croaking as usual. I continued on and eventually found myself in the abandoned building opposite the target's residence. As I made my way to the top, I tripped slightly on a step, causing a noise that made the night watchman's flashlight illuminate the ceiling above me through the ruined open window. I simply ducked and everything was okay. Or so I thought.

To tell you the truth, that watchman had always scared me. It was as if he knew when I would be observing the man, whether it was from afar or from across the street. In any case, I slowly and quietly removed my aging rifle components from my pack. The stock seemed weird, it was as if the moist air around me had soaked into it somehow. At the bottom of the pack were my binoculars. Using them to gaze through the open window, I spotted a flickering light. I didn't know what to make of it, but my guess was that the light was on the verge of burning out, like a lantern without any oil. I shuddered, imagining being in a deep forest without any light. It seemed too real a possibility, so I lit the lantern I had with me.

The light from that lantern must have been very visible from the street, because before I knew it, someone was riddling the area with bullets. Leaving my rifle components behind, I ran out with my binoculars and fled into the back alley. I slid into the shadows easily, and soon, I could no longer hear any commotion. Not that there was much to begin with; the streets of these parts of the town didn't have a lot of people in them anyway.

I returned. My rifle parts were gone. However, in their place was a small note.

"Meet me at Karij." That's what it said.

I recognized the handwriting instantly. It was that of my boss.
